Charitible Gifts

There are many ways to make donations to The Vietnam Women’s Memorial Fund in addition to money – donations also may be made of stocks, bonds, and property; gift annuities; gifts by will or living trusts (requests); life insurance, and individual retirement accounts. Some of our donors have included the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Fund in their wills. For contributors who wish to maximize tax savings in connection with their giving, federal and state tax laws do recognize the importance of encouraging charitable gifts by providing incentives. The following information about ways to give does not offer legal or tax advice. We strongly recommend that you contact your attorney or financial advisor for specific information on your tax situation.
Gifts of Stocks, Bonds or Real Property
A donor usually gets a double benefit when giving appreciated stocks and bonds. First, an income deduction is received for the fair value of the securities at the time given. Second, the donor does not have to pay capital gains taxes on the appreciated value. Real property, such as real estate, can be transferred to Vietnam Women’s Memorial Fund. If interested in making a donation of real property or securities, please contact Eastern National at 877.463.3647.
Gift Annuities
You can give a gift and still get a lifetime income in return through a gift annuity, a pooled income fund, or charitable remainder trust. Even though the funds may not be available to the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Fund right away, you would be entitled to an income tax deduction equal to the value of the gift in the year you make the gift, plus regular income payments to you for your lifetime. There are also ways to make a gift and retain the principal for your family members. Such gifts can be made through a Charitable Gift Annuity, Remainder Trust, or Charitable Lead Trust.
Bequests
Gifts by will (or living trusts) may be for a specific dollar amount, a percentage of the total estate, or the remainder of the estate after debts, taxes, and other bequests have been paid.
Life Insurance
A paid-up life insurance policy that is no longer needed for its original purpose can be given to the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Fund. The donor will receive an income tax deduction for the case surrender value of the policy. If the policy is not fully paid up and the donor continues to pay the premiums, deductions can be taken for the amount of payments made. The Vietnam Women’s Memorial Fund can also be included as a beneficiary on life insurance policies. Normally, any portion given to the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Fund would be deductible for estate tax purposes.
Individual Retirement Accounts
Retirement accounts such as IRAs, 401(k)s, or 403(b)s can provide a gift opportunity which may reduce income and estate taxes, depending upon the situation.
